Fort Myers Florida Auto Insurance
Having the right Fort Myers Florida auto insurance policy will get you back on the road quickly if you are involved in an accident or your car is stolen. It also provides protection against lawsuits brought against you due to your negligence. Each state has different requirements when it comes to auto insurance, but a typical Fort Myers Florida auto policy will include:
Bodily Injury Liability – This coverage applies to injuries that you, or others covered under the policy, cause to someone else. All states require some type of minimum financial responsibility proof and insurance is the most used way of providing that proof.
Property Damage Liability – This coverage applies to damage caused by you, or other covered persons, to the property of others. Normally we think of a collision with another car but it would also include coverage if you spin off and hit a home, sign pole, fire hydrant etc.
Collision – This coverage takes care of repairing your vehicle when it is damaged in an accident. Collision coverage will normally have a deductible that you pay. The higher the deductible the lower the premium will be for this coverage. Collision coverage will pay even if you are at fault in the accident. If you’re not at fault, your insurance company may try to recover the amount they paid you from the other driver’s insurance company. If they are successful, you will be reimbursed for the deductible.
Comprehensive (aka Other Than Collision) – This coverage pays for loss due to your vehicle for events other than collision. Types of losses that fall under comprehensive coverage would be: Fire, Theft, Vandalism, Hurricane, Flood or contact with an animal, such as a deer or bird. Glass coverage is also covered under comprehensive and some companies will offer glass coverage with or without a deductible.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage – This coverage pays you, or other persons covered, for negligence caused by someone who does not have insurance or does not have enough insurance to pay for your total loss. Under your policy, payments are made (up to the limits purchased) just as if the responsible party did have insurance.
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (aka UMPD) – This coverage repairs your car when it is damaged by a negligent uninsured motorist. If you have collision coverage it will waive your deductible and repair your car. If you do not have collision coverage it will pay up to the amount specified in the policy, usually around $3,500.
Medical – This coverage pays for treatment of injuries to the driver and passengers of the policyholder’s car. Depending on the insurance company, medical can be excess or primary. Excess means that the policy will pay only the medical expenses in excess of what your personal or primary medical insurance does not pay. Primary would mean it will pay even if you collect under your personal or primary medical insurance.
Rental Reimbursement and Towing – Rental reimbursement will pay for renting a car when your auto is disabled due to an accident and towing will tow your disabled car and offer some minor road side services. These two are optional coverage with limits and coverage varying between companies.
